In a closed and controlled system, water is being transported through a peristaltic pump and 15 meter long transparent hoses and is then distributed into nine PVC bubble type canister (spheres).

Those air filled spheres rest on a semi-transparent fabric-based material (6x10 m in size) that is hung up parallel to the floor in 2.5 meters height. They are filled independently through a control system of 18 solenoid valves. The overall form and shape of the fabric is altered as the spheres are lowered and lifted depending on the amount of water they contain at that moment in time.

The pressure in this water cycle is constantly changing. The contrasting action of filling and emptying creates a mix of water and air. The air bubbles are moving backwards and forwards, slow down and accelerate again soon after.

This system is a network of vessels in constant interaction and shows a complex mutual dependency, so the closed system now tends to be an open one.

In the installation Hydrosphere (2013) a hierarchical and a heterarchical system intersect. On the one hand the programming of the control and on the other hand the flowing exchange of air and water. The air gives the spheres their shape and the water causes the spheres to lower and raise due to the different gravity or amount of water. The result is an uncontrollable polyphony. The water flows like shared information or a liquid meta-level which circulates in between.

Sarah Rechberger’s artistic explorations are deeply rooted in a scientific investigative spirit. Her works often have a laboratory-like character and resemble precise, articulated experimental testbeds, which reflect fragile constellations of life and social processes and structures. In her project A-Symbiose (2012/2013) she created an in vitro biotope for the manual cultivation of orchids. The procedure developed for the industrial mass production of these plants served as a precedent: an artificial habitat sustained by nutrients and germfree air and water. The plants are isolated, only exposed to light from the outside, while needing to be protected from environmental influences like bacteria or mold. By contrast, in their natural habitat orchid seeds require a symbiotic fungus – mycorrhiza – that feeds the embryo for germination. This fungus infects the orchid seed, invades it, and provides it with all the necessary vital substances. Without this infection, the protocorm would die back. Upon human intervention, the orchids – which only grow in symbiosis with mycorrhizal fungi in nature – suddenly exist in “a-symbiosis”, a fundamental change of relations. When airborne mold spores enter this artificial habitat, a process of displacement commences. The spores land on the substrate, proliferate rapidly, and ultimately overgrow the orchids. The mold depletes the resources of the substrate and dominates the habitat forever.

Das künstlerische Interesse von Sarah Rechberger ist tief verbunden mit einem naturwissenschaftlichen Forscherinnengeist. Ihre Arbeiten besitzen einen Laborcharakter, gleichen präzise und ästhetisch gestalteten Versuchsanordnungen, die fragile Lebenszusammenhänge untersuchen und gesellschaftliche Prozesse und Strukturen reflektieren. Mit ihrem Projekt A-Symbiose (2012/ 2013) erschafft sie ein In-vitro-Biotop für die manuelle Aufzucht von Orchideen. Als Vorbild dient ihr das Verfahren, das für die industrielle Massenproduktion dieser Pflanzen entwickelt wurde: ein künstlicher Lebensraum mit Hilfe von Nährstoffen, keimfreier Luft und Wasser. Die Pflanzen sind abgeschirmt, dürfen nur Licht von außen aufnehmen, vor Umwelteinflüssen wie Bakterien oder Schimmelpilzen müssen sie geschützt werden. In ihrem natürlichen Lebensraum hingegen benötigen die Orchideensamen zur Keimung einen Symbiosepilz – Mykorrhiza –, der den Embryo ernährt. Dieser Pilz infiziert den Samen der Orchideen, dringt in ihn ein und versorgt ihn mit allen lebensnotwendigen Substanzen. Ohne diese Infektion würde das Protokorm absterben. Die in der Natur ausschließlich in Symbiose mit Mykorrhizapilzen gedeihenden Orchideen existieren nach dem Eingreifen des Menschen plötzlich in A-Symbiose, eine fundamentale Veränderung der Beziehungen. Dringen dazu Schimmelpilzsporen aus der Luft in diesen künstlichen Lebensraum ein, beginnt ein Verdrängungsprozess. Die Sporen landen auf dem Nährboden, vermehren sich rasch und überwuchern schließlich die Orchideen. Der Schimmelpilz nimmt die Ressourcen des Nährbodens in sich auf und dominiert für immer den Lebensraum.

In einem offenen Glasgefäß mit sterilem Nährboden wachsen nach ein paar Tagen Schimmelpilze und Bakterienkulturen. Ich untersuche diese „Landschaft“ mit einer Kleinbildkamera und lege ein Raster darüber mit der Größe des Sensors der Kamera (36 x 24 mm). Ähnlich einem Satelliten nehme ich von oben Bilder auf, kartographiere, und mache das unterliegende, unterirdische Myzel, Geflecht des Schimmelpilzes sichtbar. Der Nährboden ist im Gegensatz zur Erde transparent und kann von unten durchleuchtet werden. Das Bild, welches im Nährboden entsteht ist eine einzigartige Aufnahme der Luft im Raum, der Umgebung und der Menschen, die anwesend sind. Das Geflecht, die Hyphen des Myzels haben offene Grenzen wie die Luft, die sie transportieren und existieren nebeneinander und ineinander.

MYZEL – inspiriert von dem Gedanken, eine offene Struktur innerhalb eines begrenzten Rahmens wachsen zu lassen. Ich durchleuchte einen Nährboden, der im Zeitrahmen der Ausstellung sein eigenes Leben entwickelt. Das Myzel des Pilzes breitet sich netzartig aus. Die einzelnen Zellen / Sporen vermehren und verbinden - connecten sich bis es immer mehr zu einem gemeinschaftlichen Gewebe wird. So spiegelt es auch die Idee wieder, des vernetzten, kommunizierenden und offenen Zugangs zur Kunst und der Künstler zueinander.

In a medical book, I read that the heart is a magnet because the iron in the blood circulates there and creates a magnetic field. The earth also has a heart where the iron rotates in the core and creates a magnetic field. The field surrounds the planet like a protective shield. It is like a huge dynamo inside. In the future, humans may make a lot more out of the magnet in their chests. For me, the heart is creative and ecological because it can communicate with the earth. Everyone carries a possible utopia inside. The work is a version, created at this specific place. I used the material that I found in the local area. Like branches and tree seeds. Maple seeds resemble small propellers or vortices when thrown in the air. With the branches, I constructed an imperfect sphere. The construction is held by a four-meter branch that is inclined by 23.5 ° like the earth‘s axis. I motivated the visitors to run around the sphere a few times to make the blood circulate faster in their bodies. Then we lay down on the ground and looked up at the sky to notice the faster beating heart. Together we went on an imaginary journey through the different layers of the earth to the core. To link our magnet with the earth‘s magnetic field. Then I asked them to go inside the sphere and distributed to all the maple seeds. We threw them into the air at the same time, and the seeds vortices down on the ground again.

Illim bezeichnet im lateinischen den Punkt räumlich von dort und zeitlich von da an. Dieser Punkt entzieht sich der Sprache des klar definierbaren und ist zugleich Orientierungspunkt und Kreuzungspunkt unterschiedlicher Systeme.

Im Spannungsfeld von Heterogenität entsteht Homogenität und umgekehrt.

Die Punkte die ich aufziehe erinnern an Vermessungen, an ein Ordnungsraster, doch ist jeder Punkt für sich eine Öffnung, ein Nadelöhr, oder ein Pfeil der aus dem Element selbst schießt. Punktum lat. bedeutet Punkt, Stich, Mal, Augenblick.

Die Punktierung in der Wand verschwindet für einen Moment im Lichtkegel.

Illim in latin marks the point spatially from there and from then on. This point evades the language of the clearly definable and is at the same time a point of reference and point of intersection of different systems.

In the field of tension of heterogeneity arises homogeneity and vice versa.

The dots that I pick up are reminiscent of measurements, of a grid of order, but each point is itself an opening, a needle eye, or an arrow shooting from the element itself. Punctum means point, stitch, mark, moment

The Big Bang takes place at any moment and creates a depth in time.

It seems that the hole in the wall disapears for a moment.

A flat, round, black tray with water is placed on the ground. The sun reflects centrally in the water’s surface. Through the focusing tube of a device constructed by the artist, the viewer takes aim at the sun’s reflection and marks the position on the floor indicated by a plumb bob. This point corresponds to the current position of the sun. As the sun shifts, the viewer moves the mark on the ground while refocusing the device to capture the new point of reflection. This game of reflection-chasing and ground-marking continues until the sun is no longer visible in the water’s surface. The sun’s movements are continuously recorded as ephemeral images onto the ground. The experiment functions similarly to a camera. The size of the drawing depends on the height of the viewer.

From the perspective of the viewer it appears as if the sun would revolve around the black tray and her own body. However, in reality the viewer and the earth move around the sun, and the points mark the movement of the earth as it rotates on its own axis. We construct the notion of own fixedness in order to orient ourselves in time and space.

The device is reminiscent of old instruments used for surveying land and measuring the earth’s surface. This method is part of geodesy, literally meaning ‘to partition the world’. If you were to puncture the earth more deeply, magma would flow out and create small marks on the surface, reminiscent of the sun points. It´s perforated.

In der Mitte ist eine Mechanik (Kurbelwelle) angebracht. Durch Rotation bewegt der exzentrische Punkt die vier Drähte, die an dem elastischen, transparenten Stoff angebracht sind, hin und her.

Ein Projektor bescheint von unten den Kubus. Die Projektion ist ein einfaches Quadrat. Ein Still – unbewegt. Erst durch die Bewegung des Membrans wird die gerade Linie auf jeder Seite zu einer Kurve gebogen. Durch die Vor- und Zurückbewegung schwingt die Linie nach oben und unten.

The wave is a part of the circle.

A crankshaft is mounted in the center of a cube made of transparent fabric. As it rotates, the crank moves four wires, which are attached to the elastic transparent fabric, back and forth. A projector beams a white square from below onto the cube. The projection is a still – motionless. Only through the movement of the fabric is the straight line on each side bowed to form a wave.

Styrofoam, needle, ink on paper

Styrofoam is a material like plastic, which is produced from fossil oil. A styrofoam cup will survive for over four hundred years. It is not degradable for 500 years. The material points in the future. Future of the planet. It does not disappear. Remains preserved in nature and is in our bodies and also in the bodies of marine animals.

The rotating vortices create a field of possibilities that are not yet defined, thus pointing to the future. How will our behavior affect the earth in the future?

Aspalt, bitumen a product of oil covers the earth, sticks everywhere. Like cars drive with fossil oil fuel. Plastic and styrofoam, micro plastic covers everywhere

A movement directed both inwards and outwards. Fluid transitions between the space that resonates and the space that visually enters the window of the projection. Pulsating, the projection reaches bejond these  demarcations, enterst the opening which distills, enters the core, the projection´s central point. With each swing of the pendulum, the window is horzontally and  vertically extanded until you can enter the projection. It envelops you, while sound fills the space you occupy. The movement is funnelld again, flows, touches the high and low points of the oscillation. These points are united by sound and light. The levels of the funnel are united by the flowing voice. Like drops condensing above and following down again, they emit waves to the clear surface. Opposites which strain appart are lead through the upwards and downwards movement to a synthesis. The two-dimensional window of the projection (video), with ist visible verical and horizontal axes, is depth-bound, dragged downwards, becoming an opening in the wall of the room. In the same way, the sound appears to consist of two dimensions. We hear pitch and duration. The third dimension, depth, escapes us, although we know it exists. The spaces of projection and sound merge together and gather at the centre.

The performance is divided into four scenes, conveying the vertical, horizontal, depth-bound and protruding axes. The tree axes in the rectangular space sketch their own space-time continuum, in which I intervene by means of the movements of my body. Beginning with my body, connecting myself to the space, I seek interaction and connection with the audience. 

The space is the extension of my body, in it i convey my inner movement; it plays with the polarities of light and shade, right-left, above-below, inwards-outwards, soft-loud, high-low. My movements in this space, voice, projection merge together and mutually determine each other.

The aim is to dismantle polarities or to generate the tension that results from the oppositional. An alchemical process. I see the space, the frame, the body as an alembic, or vessel. A space in a continual process of flux, expansion, clarification and refinement. The piece is inspired by  vivid and moving dreams i have had since August 2006, dreams which  show me at regular intervals how to develop the theme. Just as the space itself connects polarities, so too do dream and reality come together at a direct interface. The work for this piece took place on many levels. In my dreams, in life´s intense experiences, and at the level of artistic and technical execution.

LOCKER GALLERY, MYZEL - inspired by the idea of growing an open structure within a limited framework. I shed light on a breeding ground that develops its own life in the time frame of the exhibition. The mycelium of the fungus spreads like a net.
The individual cells / spores proliferate and connect - until they become more and more common tissue. So it reflects the idea of the Locker Gallery, the networked, communicating and open access to art and the artist to each other.

Where is the limit of the individual?
